Music used to mean something more. James Brown helped stopped the riots after MLK’s death. Ray Charles showed white people that it’s ok to have a little soul when he covered their country songs. Crosby Stills Nash and Young spoke openly about the tragedy at Kent State. And I know there are songs that hit people today. There is music that really means something, and a lot of the music out today is actually very good. I wonder if that’s the problem. It may not be that musicians don’t write great songs that have the ability to motivate and effect change, it may be that listeners just don’t care. That’s what scares me about music’s future, that there is too much good stuff out and way too much apathy in its listeners for this once valid art form to ever help people through times like it has in the past. When it was more than a, “Oh, that’s my jam!” moment, and more like, “that song taught me how to heal.”

Yours truly,

Embittered and failed musician-type

Nothing has made me want to be a more heavenly son than becoming an earthly dad. To think that God gets such enjoyment from my existence! It is gratifying to think that I might gratify Him in the same way my son brings me delight, by just being me.

At 2am this morning I decided M Night Shyamalan missed an element in one of his films. My son is The Last PissBender, able to control urine spouts with such frightening accuracy I dare say he is already a master.
